“Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3” is officially set to go into production, according to director James Gunn, via a recent tweet he shared on his Twitter account. Fans have been waiting for the film to arrive in movie houses for years now and it seems the third film in the series is finally on its way.

Per the this tweet from James Gunn, it seems Nov. 8, 2021 is the official production date of the third film! In the tweet, Gunn writes: “It’s been a strange & long & at times challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way have only made this moment more blissful. Back on set with my Guardians family for the first day of shooting #gotgvol3.”

For those not aware of what Gunn is referring to when he says it’s been “a strange & long at times challenging journey to get here,…” because the director was originally fired from the production of the third film in Fall 2018 after a series of “offensive old tweets” from the filmmaker had resurfaced online.

After losing his spot on the film’s production Gunn went on to work on Warner Bros.’ “The Suicide Squad.” In 2019, Disney decided to bring Gunn back for the third film. Although, at this time the director had been booked out on projects for quite sometime.

Because of this series of events, the third film’s release was pushed back by multiple years, moving it farther down the lineup of releases in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Currently, if no more changes come about to the production of the movie, this film is set to be released in theaters May 23, 2023.

For a frame of reference on how big the gap has been between the second and third film in this series, “Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2” came out in theaters on May 5, 2017.
